Birchbox, Take 2

15 Oct

Last month began my foray into Birchbox, the beauty-sample company that for $10/month will supposedly send you a box chock full of luxurious, fun, and innovative beauty, health, and lifestyle items.  Supposedly.

I had mixed feelings about last month’s box.  I have even more doom and gloom about this month’s box.  I was excited when I first watched Birchbox’s sneak peek video here.  The video showed so many glam and fun products that I was hopeful that my second Birchbox would be awesome.  Was it?  In short, it kind of sucked.

Here’s what I got:

This month, Birchbox teamed up with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop as discussed here.  Now, I love Gwyenth and I like Goop — especially the recipes.  I thought this was a novel idea and looked forward to see what all-natural, luxe items would arrive in this month’s Birchbox.

As soon as I opened the box, I was disappointed.  Why, you ask?  Two words: LUNA Bar.  Are you kidding me?  First off, I don’t care how much “organic” stuff you put in this bar, or how “lemony zesty” you swear it is, the fact that I can’t eat most tree nuts trumps it all.  This bar will be going in the garbage.  I don’t want my throat swelling or face face itching.  No thank you, Birchbox.

Inside the Birchbox: LUNA Bar (a “lifestyle extra”), amika nourishing mask, Chantecaille Faux Cils Mascara, DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer, EVE LOM Cleanser and Muslin Cloth

Yawn.  I am thrilled about the Chantecaille mascara because it’s a very luxurious brand and I’ve heard good things about the products.  I also am looking forward to trying out the DDF pore minimizer as well.  I don’t care that much for masks and the cleanser/muslin cloth combo looks like more trouble than it’s worth.  And, of course, don’t get me started again on putting a food item — one that involves tree nuts, especially — into ANY Birchbox.  Ever.

I grade this month’s Birchbox a D.  Considering the great products Birchbox teased us with — Essie nail polish, Might Tea Leaf, Kiehl’s eye cream, Ouidad Curl Cream, Kiehl’s body cleanser, beautyblender doubles, Caudalie, etc. — I feel that my box got the short end of the stick.    I understand that each box is slightly different, but from the reviews I’ve been reading about October’s Birchbox, a LOT of people received mediocre and/or terrible boxes.  Sad, since it appeared that there were many great products to choose from.

News flash to Birchbox: if you want to keep and impress a first time customer, don’t send them two lackluster boxes in a row straight out the gate!  I am giving Birchbox one more month and if the third box is a iffy as the previous two, I will be saying au revoir to this company for good.
