The Wishing Tomb

23 Feb

I’m ready to announce that my second collection, The Wishing Tomb, has been awarded the 2012 Perugia Press Book Award for Women!  The book will be out in Fall 2012, with a 10-reading tour to follow!

Here is my artist’s statement on the collection:

The Wishing Tomb is a love letter to a city that has been defined by its travails and triumphs. New Orleans, that quintessential city of jazz and yellow fevers, of hurricanes and Creole cuisine, is integral to America’s cultural and historical landscape. This collection is a narrative of this place– its resiliency and transcendence,  of urban life and its intersection with race/class/landscape/art–but more than that, these poems create a portrait of us all: how connected we are to the land we love, how history sometimes escapes us, and how even in our tragedies, we can be made whole again by simply rebuilding and moving forward.

Some poems from the collection:

“All Saints Day in New Orleans: Decorating the Tombs”

“Holt Cemetery, New Orleans”

“Photograph of Hilma Burt’s Mirrored Ballroom, 1907”

“Notebook: Early Pastoral”
